The Reservoir was built between 1912 and 1915 to supply water to Silverton and Broken Hill. Broken Hill South was one of the largest of the Broken Hill lead-zinc mines and a major member of the Collins House group of companies. During the nineteen thirties it diversified into various other mining activities including a wide scale programme of mineral exploration. The mine itself closed in 1972 with the bulk of its operations being taken over by CRA, North Broken Hill and WMC.
