The Mayor of Darwin, Dr Ella Stack is partly obscured behind the Queen. The plaque reads 'This plaque was erected in memory of those people who lost their lives during Cyclone Tracy in Darwin on 24th and 25th December 1974 and was unveiled by Her Majesty the Queen on 26th March 1977'. A list of those who died follows. The cyclone killed 71 people, left 20,000 people homeless and destroyed more than 70 percent of Darwin's buildings. Taken during the Queen's 1977 official visit to Australia.
Comments: Queen Elizabeth visited Australia as part of her Silver Jubilee tour of the Commonwealth. While in Australia, she presided over the State Opening of Parliament in Canberra, visited all capital cities plus Launceston, Newcastle and other regional centres.
