Its predecessors included on one side the Federated Society of Boilermakers & Iron Shipbuilders of Australia (registered federally 1911), Federated Society of Boilermakers Iron Shipbuilders & Structural Iron & Steel Workers of Australia from 1929, Boilermakers Society of Australia (1937-1965). On the other side was the Blacksmiths Society of Australasia (registered in 1919 but established in 1911), and the Blacksmiths Society of Australia (1954-1965). In 1972 the Boilermake and Blacksmiths Society amalgamated with the Amalgamated Engineering Union to form the Amalgamated Metal Workers Union.
