After graduating in law, he joined the A.I.F. achieving the rank of Brigade Major. In 1942 Pond was captured in Malaya and for the duration of the war remined a Prisoner-of-war. From 1946 to 1970 he was a partner in the law firm of Whiting & Byrne, a member of the Standing Committee of Convocation University of Melbourne representing Arts for 1946 to 1966 and law graduates 1966 to 1970 and a member of various other committees.
