It serves as a commemorative object to celebrate the Centenary of National Mutual, and the rifle was once owned by the founder of National Mutual, John Montgomery Templeton, CMG FIA. Templeton delivered his devoted service to the company from its inception in 1869 until his death in 1908. This rifle was used by Templeton at International Rifle Matches in England, and is accompanied by a team members portrait of the Scotch Team he captained in these tournaments.
Inscription: This rifle was owned by Colonel J.M. Templeton, the Founder of National Mutual Life. / It was used by him when he captained a Scotch Team in the International Rifle Match in England / during 1874 and again in the Kolapore Cup at Bisley, England. / On the occasion of the Centenary of National Mutual, the rifle was presented to the Staff / Association by Mr J.T. Derham, a member of the Derham family which held it for many years. / The accompanying photograph was donated by J.M. Templeton.'
