Completing a B.Sc. degree in 1931, Dr Smith obtained an extension from the Education Department in order to work for his M.Sc. degree in the area of chemistry, which was completed in 1933. In 1934 Dr Smith was awarded an 1851 Scholorship to study at Oxford University where he graduated with a D.Phil. degree in 1936
