Agent TypeOrganisationActivities & OccupationsReligious organisationHistoryNorth Carlton was sanctioned as a separate parish in 1885 by Bishop Moorhouse. Shortly afterwards a lofty brick building with stucco buttresses was erected as a temporary church which was intended to be used later as a Sunday School hall. It is this structure which is today St Michael's Anglican Church, North Carlton. The first service was held in the church on Sunday 24 May 1885. Subsequently a Sunday School hall was built facing McPherson St. By the late 1980's the congregation had dwindled to a small group of elderly members and was threatened with closure. David Williams, then a lecturer at Ridley College, agreed to become the honorary vicar for five years to see if the parish could be "re-birthed". He was able to attract some young people and families and gradually got the parish back on its feet. With growing numbers of members St Michaels has also seen the renewal of all its physical plant.
