Series[UMA-SR-000002539] 1/2 Letterbook of Matthew James EveringhamAccession[1974.0084] RITCHIE FAMILY AND BUSINESS CORRESPONDENCEIdentifierUMA-ITE-1974008405378Scope and ContentThe book appears to consist of copies of three letters from Everingham to Samuel Shepherd in England. The letters give details of operations of the "Rum Corp" and "various methods of trade", of life in Sydney, of Everingham's efforts to farm his land and of an unsuccessful attempt to cross the Blue Mountains in 1796. Included are three newspaper cuttings concerning aspects of progress in N.S.W. (sources and dates unknown); also, a note dated 1823 recording statistics on the emancipated convict in N.S.W. The letters as written are not in chronological order. Since 1817 is given as the year of Everingham's death, he cannot be the writer of the last-mentioned item. It would appear that copies were made in England and that Daniel Ritchie acquired the book at a time when he was interested in convicts and transportation as a method of punishment.
