John Stuart Hepburn of Smeaton, Victoria. He graduated in mining engineering from the Ballarat School of Mines about 1907, served in Salonika in World War 1 rising to the rank of Major with Military Cross and 2 bars. He became a mining engineer and an Associate of the London Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. His work took him to Central and South America and North and East Africa. He died of pneumonia on 2nd January 1937 in Nigeria.
