The group is seated outside the Western station on the Umanak Fjord. In 1929 Loewe accompanied Professor Alfred Wegener, pioneer of continental-drift theory, on his last Greenland expedition July 1930-August 1931. Wegener immediately set about organizing a trial expedition for the summer of 1929 to select a site for the western station and a route onto the inland ice. A site at the head of Umanak Fjord near 71°N was selected for the western station. Inscription: "(illegible) Umanak Sommer 1929". Names of people are Indentified however some are illegible.
