The family moved to Melbourne in the late 1880s, where one son became the proprietor of the trade journal 'The Australasian Coachbuilder and Saddler'. The collection consists of family photographs and photographs used to illustrate 'The Australasian Coachbuilder and Saddler'. This photograph shows two men and a woman, seated on a horse-drawn coach owned by L.G.Cole and Co. Written on the verso is: "Visit of Mrs Henry E. Allen to New Zealand. This photograph was taken at the home of Mr E.M. Lovell-Smith, Christchurch, N.Z., on Nov. 7 1938. Names, left to right: James Rugg (driver for Cobb and Co. Canterbury, Westland N.Z.), Mrs Allen (daughter of the Honourable Freeman Cobb, of Brewster, Mass., U.S.A., founder of Cobb & Co. in Victoria, Australia and South Africa) and J.W. Johnston (driver and coach proprietor Little River and Alcaroa). The 'Burton' coach of Cobb and Co., which is the property of Lovell-Smith, was built in 1865-66, for the Overland route from Christchurch to Hakitika, N.Z. by A.G. Houlland, once a well known N.Z. coachbuilder."
