Alf Dickie and Sam Goldbloom at a reception in Melbourne in 1960. Robeson was an internationally renowned United States bass-baritone singer who was known for his wide-ranging peace, social justice and trade union activism. Goldbloom was a founding member of the Congress for International Cooperation and Disarmament, becoming its first secretary and later president. Dickie played a leading role in the Australian peace movement and was the first chairperson of the Australian Peace Council. The Communist Party of Australia was founded in Sydney in 1920 by a group of Australian Socialists who were inspired by the Russian revolution.
