The “Fairlea Five” (named after the Melbourne women’s’ prison where they were jailed) were members of the Save Our Sons movement. In 1971, as anti-war sentiment grew in Australia, they were jailed after being found guilty of wilful trespass for handing out leaflets to young conscripts on their way to Vietnam. L-R: George Crawford, Jean McLean, Jo Mclain Cross, Bernie Taft and Joan Coxsedge. The Communist Party of Australia was founded in Sydney in 1920 by a group of Australian Socialists who were inspired by the Russian revolution. It dissolved in 1991.
