The meeting took place after Ronald Ryan was condemned to death for the shooting murder of prison officer George Hodson, during an escape from Pentridge Prison in 1965. His was the last judicial hanging in Australia.

The Communist Party of Australia was founded in Sydney in 1920 by a group of Australian Socialists who were inspired by the Russian revolution. It dissolved in 1991.

Inscription: "Meeting in Coburg Town Hall after Ryan condemned to death. Bomb scare halfway through. Police suggested we should leave but only one woman and her daughter left. The meeting proceeded.
