Brian Stewart has been one of Canada's most prominent foreign correspondents, This file contains a 29 October 1985 letter from Stewart to Greer. In it, Stewart praises Greer’s journalism about the famine, particularly her balanced coverage of the work of the Ethiopian Refugee Resettlement Commission, the government-run body that moved people from famine regions to places where there was food. In July 2017, Stewart granted University of Melbourne Archives permission to reproduce this letter because it accurately represented his views at the time but he notes that by 1986 “stories of government brutality towards tens of thousands of famine victims who were forcibly removed began to surface”. He writes: “Since that period I’ve looked back on the Resettlement Program as a tragic act of repression.”Access StatusAccess restrictions applyRequest TypeRequest unitUnit2017.0002 Unit 0002MenuBrowse digitised items | Available in the Reading Room
