Greer was a Founding Signatory to the statement, Charter 88, which was released on 30/11/1988 on the 300th anniversary of the 'Glorious Revolution' of 1688, and argued for a modern democracy in Britain, with accountable government and equal rights for all citizens. Charter 88 was presented to the Thatcher government. The statement, originally signed by several hundred individuals, gathered widespread support and Charter 88 was set up as a broad based organisation to continue to work to change the state of Thatcher's Britain.
