Earlier access may be available by applying under the Commonwealth Freedom of Information Act 1982 directly to the Attorney-General's Department.This series contains briefing notes on Convention Agenda Items, prepared in the Commonwealth Attorney-General's Department for the information of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Delegation. The notes were known as Legal Secretary's Briefing Notes or Legal Secretary's Papers. They are accompanied by background material (of various dates) and lists of sources, etc.

The briefing notes cover items on the agenda at plenary sessions in 1975, 1976, 1983 and 1985. The notes for each Convention are arranged numerically according to Agenda Item number.

Certain files in the series also contain 'Notes for Government delegates'. The Commonwealth Delegation included members of Government and Opposition parties. The Notes for Government delegates indicate the proposed Government attitude to Agenda Items.

One file is solely devoted to reference material on Agenda Item A.1 (integrated system of courts) listed for consideration at the Adelaide Convention in 1983. This file is not a clear part of the sequence of briefing notes, but seems to be related to them.

The briefing notes were probably widely distributed to delegates and officers, but those now in the custody of Australian Archives are the only known surviving copies.
