Bates, Edward Albert
Description
HistoryEdward Bates was born in Fitzroy and educated at Scotch College and the University of Melbourne. He was articled to the architecture firm Reed, Henderson & Smart between 1883-87, and was then employed by the firm as a draftsman. In June 1888 Bates entered a partnership with R. G. Hyndman, his colleague at Reed, Henderson & Smart, to form the firm of Hyndman & Bates. Their first major city commission was the warehouse and offices of E. L. Yencken in Flinders St in 1889-90, followed by works at St Mark’s Church, Fitzroy (constructed from 1891), and the Bellarine Hotel, Point Henry, 1890. After Hyndman’s death in 1901, Bates initially continued without changing the name of the practice, and later returned as a partner in the firm of his former employer, joining Charles P. Smart and Norman G. Peebles to form the partnership of Bates, Peebles & Smart in late 1907. He stayed with the firm until his death in 1931, working with Charles Smart as Bates & Smart, and then from 1926 with the addition of W. Osborn McCutcheon as Bates, Smart & McCutcheon.
