Designed by faculty member, Shigera Yura, the Japanese Room was one of a number of rooms and installations that reflected different cultures within the new building for school of architecture at the University of Melbourne. It was complemented by a Japanese garden designed by Yura, and a ceramic mural by his wife, Fumiko Yura. Two schemes and several variations of design are documented in these records. The room was fitted out with furniture designed by Yura, handwoven wallpapers, shoji screens, and various forms of traditional Japanese artwork.
