Originally established in 1851 in Australia by emigrant British engineers as a branch of the Britisn Union, it remained the AEU Australian Section until 1969 when it became autonomous. In mid-June 1972 it amalgamated with the Sheet Metal Workers (q.v.), Blacksmiths and Boilermakers (q.v.) and Federated Jewellers to form the Amalgamated Metal Workers Union (q.v.) which is its direct heir The AEU has been a pre-eminent force in labour politics especially during the power struggles after 1945.
