Various plans were conceived for the Melbourne State College and later abandoned. Staff, students and other friends of the College campaigned against this attempt to dismantle it and for a time appeared to have succeeded. However, on 1 January 1989? the College was amalgamated with the University of Melbourne. A. Grant Angus, who lectured at the College in Mathematics and Science, participated in the protest movement in 1981.
