In 1780 he established his own business that expanded in 1813 to incorporate Gibbs' sons. The firm called Antony Gibbs & Sons absorbed the Bristol, Liverpool and Australasian branches of Bright Bros. & Co. Steamship and Insurance Agents in 1881 (Robert Bright was a business associate of George Gibbs). The name of the Australasian branches became Gibbs, Bright & Co.
