He studied mathematics at the University of Melbourne 1930-33 under T M Cherry, residing at Ormond College, and winning the Aitchison Travelling Scholarship, and proceeding to Trinity College, Cambridge (Ph.D., 1938). After teaching in London and Durham, he and his wife returned to Melbourne in 1940, where he started as lecturer, becoming professor in 1952. During WWII he was seconded to the Munitions Supply Laboratories in Maribyrnong and later the Aeronautical Research Laboratories at Fishermans Bend. Professor Love also became chair of the Mathematics Standing Committee of the Schools Board [q.v.], and from 1963 head of department. Upon retirement he became professor emeritus and was appointed honorary professorial fellow with the title of professor. Renowned as a lecturer of great clarity, accuracy and completeness, his top priority was always his teaching. He died 7 August 2001.
