After graduating he worked as a House Physician and Medical Registrar for several hospitals in London. From 1950 Dr. Lovell was Senior Lecturer at St. Mary's Hospital until 1955 when he was appointed Professor of Medicine at the University of Melbourne. Professor Lovell was the first Chairman of the Medical Research Ethics Committee of National Health and Medical Research serving in this capacity from 1982 until 1988. He retired from the University in 1983. He died late April or early May 2000.
