Agent TypePersonActivities & OccupationsTrade unionistsCommunistsHistorySam Armstrong was a Scottish immigrant who took up employment at the State Electricity Commission of Victoria as a metal worker. A member of the Amalgamated Engineering Union, he became Secretary of the local branch, and eventually of the Gippsland Trades and Labour Council. He had a deep belief in shop floor organising and was shop steward of his own work area, a belief evident in his interest in the Independent Labour Party in Scotland, and his communism in Australia. He was also active in Latrobe Valley community matters, becoming a member of the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education Council. He travelled to Russia twice in his life, once as a union rep. and once in retirement.
