He worked at the A.W.A. Research Laboratories in Sydney from 1942 to 1945; with the CSIR Division 1945 to 1947, and then took a Ph.D. at the University of Bristol in 1949. From 1950 Mackenzie worked at CSIRO in the Division of Tribophysics, then in the Division of Chemical Physics, where he was Senior Principal Research Scientist until his retirement in 1985.
