From 1893 - 1896 he completed his articles in the office of H J W Stillman, a Melbourne solicitor, after which he engaged in commercial pursuits. His career as a journalist began in 1906, when he obtained a position on the staff of the Morning Herald in Perth. He returned to Melbourne in March 1909, joining the Argus as a leader writer. In April 1917 he was appointed editor of the Australasian, and at intervals served as deputy editor of the Argus. In 1918 he was chosen as the Argus representative in a delegation of Dominion journalists visiting Britain. This group reported on Western Front operations, the Clyde Fleet and Britain's war work.
