It grew directly out of Associations in each state in Australia, some of which had been founded in the 1860s to co-ordinate approaches to governments for the operation of the governments' banking accounts. The ABA managed the state [cheque] clearing houses until clearing was undertaken by an independent body. Early records of the Associated Banks, Victoria are held at ANZ Bank Archives.
