Showing in boyhood an aptitude for science, especially taxonomy, he undertook a Science degree at Melbourne (his other wish had been a career as jazz musician). Graduating BSc in 1947 (and subsequently studying towards, but not completing, an M.Sc. and a Ph.D.), he commenced in Biochemistry as Senior Demonstrator in 1951, retiring from the department as a Senior Lecturer in 1993, his favourite field being mammalian biochemistry. A founding member of University House in 1955, his extensive committee work included seven times president, and more than 15 years as convenor of the wine selection panel. He was also an original member of the 'House of Lords' group of regulars at Jimmy Watson's in Carlton. Active politically when younger, he belonged to the M.U. Labor Club, and to the Communist Party until 1956, and appeared in student political revues. A member of the Stephen Murray-Smith circle, he supported 'Overland' magazine and was a regular expeditioner to Erith Island in Bass Strait.
