Australian Foremen Stevedores' Association, Victorian Branch
Description
Agent TypeOrganisationActivities & OccupationsTrade UnionsHistoryThe AFSA was registered under the Commonwealth Conciliation and Arbitration Act 1904, in 1941 and developed from the Sydney Foremen Stevedores' Association, a union that had been in existence since 1939. The Victorian Branch was formed in February 1945. Thae AFSA was created to differentiate its members' job functions from those of the Waterside Workers Federation, an organisation with which, during the 1940s, it found little in common. The WWF had opposed the AFSAs existence and the difficult relations between the two prevailed. The AFSA affiliated with the ACTU, the Australian Labor Party and in 1950, with the Melbourne Trades Hall Council. In 1991 it amalgamated with the WWF and both contined to be known as the Waterside Workers Federation which later amalgamated with the Seamen's Union to become the Maritime Union of Australia.
