Agent TypeOrganisationActivities & OccupationsTrade UnionsHistoryIn 1995 the Automotive Food Metals and Engineering Union amalgamated with the Printing and Kindred Industries Union to become the Automotive Food Metals Engineering Printing and Kindred Industries Union, otherwise known as the Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union. Both the AFMEU and the PKIU (q.v.) had long lineages from the nineteenth century. On the metal industry side, the forerunners included: Amalgamated Engineering Union (1852-1972)(q.v.); Boilermakers and Blacksmiths Society (1880-1972) (q.v.); Sheetmetal Workers Industrial Union of Australia (1881-1972) (q.v.); the Shipwrights Union (1847-1976) (q.v.); the Federated Moulders (Metals) Union (1858-1983) (q.v.); Association of Draughting, Supervisory and Technical Employees (1917-1991) (q.v.); Vehicle Builders Employees Federation (1873-1993) (q.v.); Food Preservers and Confectionery Workers of Australia (q.v.).
