The Society traced its origins to 1948 when in concert with the Standards Association of Australia it began promoting modularity as a 'rational basis' for construction. In 1959 the Society was formally inaugurated under the leadership of Professor Henry Ingham Ashworth. The Society worked to propagate and promote research and development, increase cooperation between relevant groups and industries, and raise the overall profile of modular architecture and methodologies. A series of conferences, along with the publication of papers, manuals and reports served to further expand upon the activities of the Society. Operating on federal and state levels, council members were elected by subscribing members and organizations. Council members were tasked with lobbying, and working with, governments, construction and building contactors and other relevant groups. The Society retained close relations with the Standards Association on the development of tolerances and standards and also kept in close contact with the UK Modular Society. By 1975 the Society's various sub branches had been largely wound up and retired.
