Two part-time workers were eventually employed and Matilda Women's Refuge opened in a rented house in Brunswick in March 1978. Matilda became fully funded under the Commonwealth's Supported Assistance Accommodation Program until its closure in 1989. During its life Matilda published a newsletter, 'Seasponge Monthly'.
