He lectured at the University of Copenhagen from 1934 to 1936 and the University of Sydney from 1936 to 1945. In the following year Maxwell was appointed Chair of English at the University of Melbourne. He lectured and wrote on Old Norse as well as English, and was made a Chevalier of the Order of the Icelandic Falcon for his services to Old Norse literature in 1966 by the Icelandic government. He retired in 1968 and died in 1979.
