The ARM is a non-profit, non-party political organisation that advocates an Australian republic within the Commonwealth, with an Australian Head of State.
The ARM's first chairman was the novelist Thomas Keneally, with other founding members including the investment banker (and later Federal Opposition Leader and Prime Minister) Malcolm Turnbull, the former Australian cricket captain, Ian Chappell, and the film director Fred Schepisi. Since July 2015 the ARM has been headed by Peter FitzSimons.
