NL, which had - in response to a timber scarcity - established a pioneer hydro-electricity system on the Victoria River to power its mining and treatment operations on the Cassilis Reef. The success of the operation, which continued until 1916, was limited by the seasonal failure of the Victoria River stream flow which necessitated a shutdown for three or four months each summer.
