McMahon first mooted the idea of ASAP in Sydney in 1947, and a meeting there in December 1950 set its formation in train; meetings in other states ensued and ASAP was inaugurated on 12 January 1954. The ASAP operates as both a Professional Organisation and organiser of scientific research in cooperation with extension workers and producers.
