Australian Workers' Union Victoria-Riverina Branch
Description
Agent TypeOrganisationActivities & OccupationsTrade UnionsTrade UnionsHistoryThe AWU dates from the establishment of the Australasian Shearers' Union in Creswick in 1886 and became politically influential within the Australian Labour Party. It initially organised amongst unskilled rural workers such as sheareres and later general labourers. The union is often remembered for its associations with W G Spence and the Shearers' Strikes of the 1890s. It has nevertheless had many able and influential officials and has operated continuously under the name of AWU for nearly a century. See Merritt, John "The making of the AWU", OUP, Melbourne, 1986.
