Coming from the Defence Research Laboratory in 1955, he was plunged into designing many optical devices. He also played a crucial part in the development of optical munitions in Australia during the Second World War. He was en-route to the U.K. to take up a research scholarship in 1939 when war was declared. After returning to Australia, McNeill was sent back to England to work with Professor L.C. Martin at the Imperial College, London. He subsequently played an important role in Optical Munitions in Melbourne. After his appointment with the Division of Chemical Physics, McNeill became much sought after as a lecturer. McNeill retired in 1978. In retirement he had been invited by Monash University to take up residence in the Physics Department where he made a valuable contribition to the University's research. In 1980 John McNeill died.
