The Carlton branch was started in 1870 and in 1882 the business transferred from Vaughan to Castlemaine. As the Carlton store declined, the firm built the branch in Flinders Street in 1896 where it prospered. Ball & Welch was listed in the Stock Exchange in 1935. In 1962 the company expanded and established a store in Frankston and other suburban locations. Ball & Welch was taken over by Georges Australia Ltd in 1970.
