She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Melbourne and with a PhD in Sociology from La Trobe University. She was active in the Women's Liberation Club at UM, 1974-77, and in the Women's Centre where she was a member of the Publications Committee. She was a contributing editor of the magazine, 'Scarlet Woman', 1978- 79, and a founding director of Sybylla Feminist Press from 1976-1989.
