It was to be composed of one representative from each language taught at the university.At the time this meant a representative from each of: Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Classical Greek, Dutch, French, German, Hebrew, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Modern Greek, Russian, Swedish and Syriac. The committee was responsible for planning the teaching of languages atthe university.This requireddeliberating upon, and approving subjects to be offered, devising academic standards, allocation of staff and other resources, restructuring, developing publicity and course advice for students and devising and implementing curricula for summer schools. Although the last documented meeting was conducted in 1978, it is not clear whether the committee continued after this date as there is no reference in the minutes toi plans to disband. This series documents the deliberations of the committee during the period 1974 - 1978.At this time, discussions were strongly focused on the implications for language courses of the contracted economic circumstances of the university.
