He organised his first strike amongst his fellow newspaper boys at the age of ten and left school four years later to work as a labourer. A self-proclaimed anarchist in his teen years, McDonald joined the Eureka Youth League at eighteen, soon becoming an official before leaving to join the CPA. A one time official of the Party, McDonald was expelled from the CPA in 1960 for his apparent Trotskyist beliefs. From the age of eighteen he was a member of the Building Workers Industrial Union for over twenty years before leaving and working as a freelance industrial advocate. McDonald was born in Yarraville 19 May 1930, and died 9 September 2003.
