After W.W.I, where he served as a British Army Signals Captain, McGowan emigrated to Tasmania where he began an orchard with Arthur Warner. This enterprise was transferred to Lilydale in Melbourne in 1934 where MacGowan established Mac's Cyder & Fruit Juices,Pty Ltd., a private company that produced alcoholic and non-alcoholic ciders for Victorian and interstate markets. The business was acquired in 1961 by Nathan & Wyeth and subsequently by Remy & Associates Pty. Ltd.. In 1981, Macs was sold to the opposition of Bulmer's Company.
