Universally it was known as "Melbourne State College". The Principal was Doug McDonnell who was followed by Graham J. Allen from 1974 - 1979 and then William Pye from 1979 - 1982.
The MSC was amalgamated with the Institute for Early Childhood Development from 1 January 1983, into the Melbourne College of Advanced Education, following the Commonwealth Government's Committee of Review of Commonwealth Functions in April 1981. The Review recommended that 30 institutions be incorporated into multi purpose or multi campus colleges or integrated with neighbouring universities. Following failed negotiations with other institutions, the Victorian Minister for Education suggested that the MSC and the IECD should explore amalgamation with each other.
