The suggestion was attributed to Clem Lazarus, a returned soldier then tutoring at the University. The Oxford and Cambridge Labor Clubs were also a stimulus. The MULC was founded by Brian Fitzpatrick, Ralph Gibson, Lloyd Ross, Robert Fraser and W. Macmahon Ball. The MULC's manifesto was aligned to the ALP, for all its early political commitment and bravado the early activities were confined to lunchtime debates and social events. The Provisional Committee in 1946 comprised P.A. Ryan (Sec.), C. Burns, D. Bennett, J. Ovendon, A. Durre, C. Burns and I. Hughes.
