At around this time, the ownership of the Hawthorn site was transferred to the University of Melbourne. The full amalgamation with the University of Melbourne occurred in 1996 and in 1998 it official opened as Melbourne University Private. Throughout the 2000s the various functions of the institution were either merged with other operating divisions with the University of Melbourne or sold to private or government entities.
