Agent TypeOrganisationActivities & OccupationsUniversity ClubHistoryThe Town and Gown Guild developed out of a group of women friends of the University who organised a Christmas Fete in 1936 to raise money for the new Union House. In 1930 it was decided to form a society to continue working for the Union and to further the interests of the University generally. The inaugural meeting was held on 9 August, and the Guild thereafter (with a break during the war years when members were working for war charities), purchased furnishings for the Private Dining Room, Audubon Room and Rowden White Library, and paid for the greater part of the equipment for the Guild Theatre from the proceeds of various social functions. On 7 February 1963 the object of the Guild was altered to that of raising funds towards fulfilling the needs of the students of this University, the Union being now sufficiently well equipped. In December 1976 the Chancellor, Dr L.W. Weickhardt, took the opportunity afforded by the Chancellor's Party to convey the University's thanks to Guild members for their work over the years.Search records of this agent
