After graduating he worked as a tutor and senior tutor in psychology at the University of Melbourne until 1956. From 1958 to 1961, Beswick was a graduate student on a Fulbright award at Harvard University. On his return to Melbourne he was Assistant Minister at the Wesley Church in Geelong 1961-1962 and Minister at Mornington 1963 and 1966. In the following year, Beswick was appointed Lecturer in psychology at ANU and from 1969 to 1971 Senior Lecturer at Palo Alto in California. Beswick was appointed a Fellow in Education Research at ANU in 1971 and resigned in 1976 to accept the post of Professor and Director at the Centre for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Melbourne.
