After graduating, Merry was employed by the Bank of NSW in 1933 and worked in Sydney and London until 1945 when he decided to apply his significant financial and banking knowledge and became the financial editor of the "Argus" in Melbourne. Don Merry returned to formal banking in 1947 when he was appointed Economist and later Senior Economist for the Union Bank of Australia. In 1955, Merry joined the ANZ banking group as Chief Economist and later Assistant General Manager until he retired in 1972. His activites extended to membership of many government and private sector board and committees, particularly in relation to industry, urban and environmental studies, education and the protection of historical resources. Merry died at Kyneton 28 Feb 2002.
